The Onam WhatsApp Playbook for Kerala Businesses (2026)

The Onam WhatsApp Playbook for Kerala Businesses (2026)

10 min read

The short version: Thiruvonam falls on Wednesday 26 August 2026. Atham was 16 August, so the ten days are already running. Onam marketing in Kerala rewards a regional campaign and punishes a national blast. And the money moves before the feast, not on the day.

Most Indian marketing plans jump straight from Independence Day to Diwali. That is a costly gap. Kerala's festive spend is set to reach about Rs 25,000 crore this season. Roughly 35 million people in the state celebrate Onam.

Kerala also has the highest income per head in India, close to Rs 1.9 lakh. That is about 60 percent above the national average. This is a high-spending market that almost nobody targets properly on WhatsApp.

The Onam buying calendar

Onam is not one shopping day. It is three separate waves, and most businesses only work the last one.

The three buying waves of Onam 2026, and what to send in each.

Wave one: the money lands before the buyer does

This is the wave nobody markets to. Kerala takes in more than Rs 2 lakh crore a year from Malayalis abroad, and about 80 percent of that comes from the Gulf. Families deliberately time these transfers around Onam.

Two things follow from that. Cash reaches Kerala households days or weeks before the feast. And a Malayali flying home from the Gulf spends most of it in the first 72 hours, on clothes, gold, groceries and gifts.

So if you sell any of that, your first message should go out in the Atham to Chithira stretch. Wait for Onam week and the budget is already committed.

Wave two: Uthradom, 24 August

Uthradom is the day before Thiruvonam, and it is the busiest shopping day of the year in Kerala. Markets stay open late. Anything forgotten gets bought.

This is your urgency window, and it is short. A message on the morning of 24 August reaches people who are already out shopping and deciding where to stop.

Wave three: the holiday block, 25 to 28 August

Kerala observes four public holidays, running from First Onam on 25 August through Fourth Onam on 28 August. Thiruvonam itself is 26 August.

Retail goes quiet on Thiruvonam day. Food, travel, dining out and family gifting do not. If you run a restaurant, a salon or a travel desk, this block is your peak while the rest of the market sleeps.

What actually sells

Type of businessPeak windowThe lever that works
Onasadya catering and groceries18 to 24 AugustAdvance orders with a hard cut-off
Gold and jewellery16 to 24 AugustRate booking, exchange offers, slots
Kasavu, ethnic wear, textiles16 to 25 AugustNew arrivals, sizes in stock, home trial
Home goods and appliances16 to 24 AugustA promise to deliver before Onam
Gifts and hampers20 to 25 AugustBundles at fixed price points
Restaurants and dining25 to 28 AugustTable booking in the holiday block
Salons and grooming22 to 25 AugustSlot booking, because chairs run out

Notice how many of these are capacity problems, not demand problems. A caterer cannot cook unlimited sadyas, and a salon has a fixed number of chairs.

For those businesses the campaign is not about persuading anyone. It is about filling slots before a rival does.

Why a national blast wastes money here

Say you hold 12,000 contacts across India. Only 4,000 of them are in Kerala. You plan three Onam broadcasts.

Send to everyone and you pay for 36,000 marketing messages. At Meta's India rate of Rs 0.8631, that is Rs 31,072 before GST, or Rs 36,664 with it.

Send to the Kerala segment alone and it is 12,000 messages. That works out at Rs 10,357 before GST, or Rs 12,222 with it. Segmenting saves you about Rs 24,400 on one festival.

You also protect your quality rating. An Onam offer sent to someone in Ludhiana invites a block, and blocks are what drag a number down. Price your own list with the WhatsApp message cost calculator.

Should you write in Malayalam?

Yes, for most consumer categories. Malayalam is spoken by about 97 percent of the state. Kerala also reads at a 96 percent literacy rate, so people take in what you write.

You do not need the whole message in Malayalam. A Malayalam greeting line with the offer in English works well, and it clears review more easily. Keep numbers, dates and the payment link in English so nothing gets misread.

One warning. Do not run copy through a translator and send it unchecked. A clumsy Malayalam line reads worse than plain English, and Kerala customers notice immediately.

Onam WhatsApp message sequence for Kerala businesses with send dates and template categories
Four messages across the Onam run, with the category each one should use.

The four messages that carry an Onam campaign

1. Early bird, 18 to 20 August

Tell them Onam ordering is open. Give one reason to act now: a better price, a better slot, or delivery you can promise before the day.

This is the message that catches Gulf money while it is still unspent.

2. Menu or catalogue drop, 21 to 22 August

Send the thing itself. The sadya menu. The new kasavu range. The hamper list with prices.

People forward these into family groups, which is free reach you did not pay for.

3. Last order date, 23 to 24 August

The single best-converting message of the whole campaign. More on why below.

4. Thiruvonam greeting, 26 August

No offer. No link. Just a clean Onam wish.

It feels like a wasted send. It is not. This is the message people reply to, and a reply reopens the conversation window. It also sets you up with the customers who did not buy this year.

For wording that clears review, see the guide on WhatsApp template message examples.

The last-order-date lever

Onam has a fixed date. That is rarer than it sounds, and it is your biggest advantage.

A Diwali sale can drift. A sadya on 26 August cannot. So a line like "orders close Sunday 23 August at 6pm" is not a marketing trick. It is a fact, and buyers treat it as one.

Three rules for using it:

  • Name an exact date and time. "Closing soon" does nothing. "Sunday 6pm" moves people.
  • Set it earlier than you need. If you can genuinely take orders until Monday night, close them Sunday evening. You need the buffer, and a late rush wrecks delivery.
  • Then actually close. Accept orders after the cut-off and next year's cut-off means nothing.

Pair it with remaining capacity if you know the number. "24 sadya slots left for Thiruvonam" beats any discount you could offer.

Taking advance orders in chat

Most Kerala businesses take Onam orders by phone and personal WhatsApp. That holds up until about 40 orders, and then someone loses a delivery address.

The fix is a form inside the chat. The customer picks the item, the quantity, the date and the delivery slot, and the order lands somewhere you can see it.

Send a payment link with the confirmation. It cuts your no-show rate, which matters a great deal when you have bought ingredients in advance.

Wamafy handles this with a catalogue and an auto-built order flow, plus Razorpay links minted per order on your own gateway. Whatever tool you use, the aim is the same. Get the order out of your inbox and into a list.

Timing your sends

Kerala does not run on the usual weekday rhythm during Onam week. Two windows work best:

  • 9:30am to 11am. Planning hours. People are working out what is still left to buy.
  • 7pm to 9pm. Family decision time, above all for expensive items.

Skip the afternoon of Thiruvonam entirely. Everyone is eating. A promotional message during sadya is the fastest block you will ever earn. The guide on when to send WhatsApp broadcasts in India goes deeper on this.

Submit your templates at least a day ahead. Most clear automatically in 15 to 30 minutes, but anything routed to a human reviewer can take up to 24 hours. A rejection two days before Uthradom is a bad afternoon.

Onam and Raksha Bandhan collision in the same week August 2026 segmentation guide
Two festivals, one week. Segment before you send, or one contact gets both.

Raksha Bandhan lands in the same week

Rakhi falls on Friday 28 August 2026, which sits inside Kerala's Onam holiday block.

If you sell across India, you now have two festivals, two audiences and one week. The mistake is obvious once stated and very common in practice. The same contact gets an Onam offer on Monday and a Rakhi offer on Thursday. They decide you are just sending things.

Segment by state before you send anything. Kerala and Malayalis elsewhere get Onam, while the north and west get Rakhi.

Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and the Gulf have large Malayali populations, so tag those contacts by language or interest rather than guessing by city.

If a contact genuinely fits both, pick one. Two festival offers in one week reads as spam even when both are relevant. The August sale season guide maps how the month stacks up.

What an Onam campaign costs

Take a Kerala business with 4,000 opted-in contacts, running the four-message plan and landing 600 orders.

MessageCategoryVolumeCost
Early birdMarketing4,000Rs 3,452
Catalogue dropMarketing4,000Rs 3,452
Last order dateMarketing4,000Rs 3,452
Order confirmationsUtility600Rs 69
Thiruvonam greetingMarketing4,000Rs 3,452
Total before GSTRs 13,877
Total with 18 percent GSTRs 16,375

Say those 600 orders average Rs 1,200. That is Rs 7.2 lakh of revenue against Rs 16,375 of messaging, so the campaign pays for itself at about order fourteen.

Drop the greeting message if the budget is tight. Never drop the last-order-date message.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Thiruvonam in 2026?

Thiruvonam falls on Wednesday 26 August 2026. The ten days began with Atham on 16 August, and Kerala observes four public holidays from 25 to 28 August.

Should I write my Onam messages in Malayalam?

In Kerala, yes, for most consumer categories. A Malayalam greeting line with the offer details in English works well and clears review more easily. Have a native speaker check it, because a bad translation does more harm than plain English.

When is the last day to send an Onam offer?

The morning of Uthradom, 24 August, for anything you can still deliver. After that you are competing with the cooking, so avoid promotional sends on Thiruvonam itself.

Is Onam worth marketing outside Kerala?

Yes, if you can identify your Malayali customers. There are large communities in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and across the Gulf, and sadya catering and ethnic wear sell strongly in all of them. Tag those contacts rather than guessing by city.

How do I take Onam advance orders on WhatsApp?

Use a form in the chat that captures item, quantity, date and delivery slot, then send a payment link with the confirmation. Phone orders stop working past about 40 bookings, and prepayment protects you when you have bought ingredients ahead.

Can I message my whole contact list about Onam?

You should not. Segment down to Kerala and Malayali contacts. A national blast costs several times more, and an irrelevant offer earns blocks that damage your number's quality rating.

Eight days is enough

If you have done nothing yet, you have not missed it. Submit templates today, send the early-bird message tomorrow, and set a hard cut-off for Sunday 23 August.

The businesses that do well at Onam are rarely the ones with the deepest discount. They are the ones who asked for the order a week before anyone else thought of it.
