The Ganesh Chaturthi WhatsApp Playbook: Five Waves, Four Messages
Most Ganesh Chaturthi campaigns are one message, sent on the morning of the festival to the whole list. That is wrong twice over.
It is wrong on timing, because the buying happens in five waves and only one of them is on the 14th. It is wrong on audience too, because this is a regional festival and you just paid full price to reach people who do not mark it.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on Monday 14 September. Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi is Friday 25 September. Here is how to work those eleven days, including the clash at the end that nobody has flagged yet.
The festival is not ten days for most homes
The public version of Ganeshotsav runs ten days. The version your customers buy for does not.
Homes keep Ganpati for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days. Each ending is its own visarjan, with its own run-up of sweets, flowers, catering and last-minute shopping. Maharashtra mostly does five or ten days, while urban north India mostly does one and a half.
So 2026 gives you five buying waves, not one:
| Wave | Date | Who it is |
|---|---|---|
| Sthapana (installation) | Mon 14 September | Everyone. Muhurat is 11:02 am to 1:31 pm. |
| Dedh din visarjan | Tue 15 September | The 1.5-day homes. Very large in urban north India. |
| Three-day visarjan | Wed 16 September | Smaller, but it clears sweet stock. |
| Five-day visarjan | Fri 18 September | The single biggest Maharashtra wave. |
| Seven-day visarjan | Sun 20 September | A weekend visarjan, so footfall is high. |
| Anant Chaturdashi | Fri 25 September | The ten-day homes and every public pandal. |
Send one message on the 14th and you reach all of these people once, at the one moment they are too busy to read it. The muhurat is late morning, so on the 14th your customer is setting up at home rather than shopping.
Who this reaches, and who it does not
Here is where big brands lose money. Ganesh Chaturthi is not a national festival the way Diwali is. But it is not a Maharashtra-only one either. That is the mistake people make in the other direction.
Count pandals and it gets clear. Maharashtra has over 700,000. Karnataka has around 500,000. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh have roughly 200,000 each.
Karnataka is not a rounding error, so if you set your segment to "Maharashtra only" you cut out close to half the list you could sell to.
The honest segment looks like this:
- Core: Maharashtra and Goa. Longest duration and the most spend per home.
- Strong: Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh. Real scale, above all in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
- Moderate: Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and city pockets with a Maharashtrian diaspora.
- Skip: the north and east beyond the 1.5-day city homes. Also Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which mark it very differently or not at all.
No state data on your contacts? You are not stuck. Phone number prefixes work as a proxy, and so do past delivery addresses and a single opt-in question asked once. The Onam playbook for Kerala covers the same problem from the other side of the country.
What a regional segment saves you
India marketing rates in September 2026 are Rs 0.8631 a message, with GST of 18 percent on top. So the maths is easy to run and hard to argue with.
Take a store with 12,000 contacts across India, sending four messages over the festival.
| National blast | Ganesh-belt segment | |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts reached | 12,000 | 4,200 |
| Messages sent | 48,000 | 16,800 |
| Cost ex GST | Rs 41,428.80 | Rs 14,500.08 |
| Cost with 18 percent GST | Rs 48,885.98 | Rs 17,110.09 |
That is Rs 31,775.89 saved on one festival, GST included.
The smaller send will very likely sell more, too, because the 7,800 people who were never going to buy modak decor did not get four messages about it. They did not block you either, which protects the quality rating you need intact for the sale week right after.
The categories that move
Ganesh Chaturthi drives about Rs 45,000 crore of spending across India. Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad alone make up around Rs 7,000 crore of that. A typical home spends Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 over the festival.
Where that money goes tells you what to write about:
- Sweets and modak: around Rs 2,000 crore. The most time-bound thing on this list. Pre-orders open early and close two days before each visarjan.
- Catering and snacks: around Rs 3,000 crore. Pandal feeding, family gatherings, prasad in bulk.
- Merchandise and decor: around Rs 3,000 crore. Lighting, torans, backdrops, mandap material. Buying front-loads before the 14th.
- Idols: around Rs 500 crore. Almost all local, and mostly booked well ahead.
- Apparel, gold and gifting. Smaller here than at Diwali, but real. It peaks around the weekend waves.
- Home services and cleaning. A deep clean before sthapana, then another after visarjan. Two bookings, not one.
Four messages that carry the eleven days
Four is the right number, because it covers every wave without landing in a chat more than twice a week.
| # | Send | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sat 12 September | Pre-festival. Decor, puja items, modak pre-orders, cleaning slots. Two days of lead time before sthapana. |
| 2 | Mon 14 September, 7 to 9 am | Chaturthi greeting with a same-day offer. Early, before the muhurat at 11:02 am. |
| 3 | Thu 17 September | Catches the five-day visarjan on the 18th and the seven-day on the 20th. Sweet restock, gifting, catering top-ups. |
| 4 | Wed 23 September | The run-up to Anant Chaturdashi for ten-day homes. Visarjan is Friday the 25th. |
The clash at the end
Now look at that fourth send again. Flipkart Big Billion Days is expected to open on 23 September, and Amazon's Great Indian Festival opens in the same week. Visarjan is the 25th.
So in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the last three days of Ganeshotsav sit right on top of the biggest sale week of the year. Your festive message and your sale message fight for the same person on the same day, and you pay for both.
Do not send two. Merge them for the Ganesh belt. One message on the 23rd, festive framing, sale pricing inside it. Send the separate sale broadcast to everyone else. The Big Billion Days plan has the full five-message arc for that week, and this is the one segment where you should collapse it.
One note on timing. Template review slows through September as every business files festive copy at once. Your Ganesh templates and your sale templates share that queue. Submit them together and early, not in two rounds.
The restaurant and sweet-shop version
Sell food and this festival works differently. Steamed ukadiche modak keeps for only about a day at room temperature, and demand spikes on six named dates you already know.
Run it as pre-orders, not broadcasts:
- Open pre-orders on 10 or 11 September, before the decor rush takes over.
- Close each wave two days out. Orders for the 18th close on the 16th. Say the cutoff in the message, because it is the line that drives the order.
- Offer pickup slots, not just delivery. Visarjan days bring road closures across Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. A 30-minute pickup window the customer picks beats a delivery time you cannot keep.
- Confirm every order as a utility message. At Rs 0.115 those cost a seventh of a marketing message, and they are what stops the phone ringing.
Wamafy's Restaurant and Delivery add-on runs the in-chat menu, the pickup versus delivery paths and the order status messages. It is Rs 999 a month billed annually and, like every add-on, works on any plan, including the Rs 799 Seed plan. The restaurant and cloud kitchen playbook goes deeper on the ordering flow.
When Marathi is worth it
Less often than you think, and more often than you do it now.
English is fine for Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and for younger city buyers. Marathi earns its keep in tier-two and tier-three Maharashtra, with older buyers, and in any copy that carries ritual words, where English reads stiff.
Two things to weigh first:
- Each language is its own template with its own approval. Two languages means twice the filings and twice as much to go wrong, in the month when the queue is slowest. Decide by 10 September or skip it.
- Half-translated copy is worse than English. A Marathi greeting on top of an English offer reads like a mail merge. Do the whole message or none of it.
Devanagari shows up fine on WhatsApp across devices. So the only real cost is the review time, plus getting the copy written by a person rather than run through a translator.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2026?
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Monday 14 September 2026. The sthapana muhurat, the window for installing the idol, runs from 11:02 am to 1:31 pm that day.
When is Ganesh visarjan in 2026?
There are several. The 1.5-day visarjan is 15 September, three-day is the 16th, five-day the 18th and seven-day the 20th. Anant Chaturdashi, the main ten-day visarjan, is Friday 25 September 2026.
Should I discount during Ganesh Chaturthi?
Usually not, or not by much. This is a ritual buy on fixed dates, so demand shows up without a discount. Stock, a delivery date you can keep and a clear cutoff sell better than a price cut, and they protect your margin going into the sale week.
Is a ten-day WhatsApp sequence too much?
Yes. Four messages across the eleven days is right for most businesses. Daily sends during a festival drive blocks. Blocks damage the quality rating that sets your daily sending limit, right before the September sale week.
Which states should I target for a Ganesh Chaturthi campaign?
Maharashtra and Goa are the core, but Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh add up to close to a million pandals, so do not cut them. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are worth adding at a smaller budget.
Do I need Marathi templates for a Ganesh Chaturthi campaign?
Only if a big share of your list sits outside metro Maharashtra. Each language needs its own approval, which is slow in September. Decide early, and do the full message rather than just the greeting.
Start with the segment, not the copy
The copy is the easy part. Three decisions matter more: which states you send to, which of the five waves you are selling into, and whether you have accepted that the last send clashes with Big Billion Days.
